Hamburger Stroganoff

A food fad from the 1970s….

Hamburger Helper was first introduced in 1971. In 2005, the American-based Food Network listed Hamburger Helper as number three in its list of the top five fad foods of the 1970s.  Hamburger Helper  consists of boxed pasta bundled with a packet or packets of powdered sauce/seasonings. The contents of each box are combined with browned ground beef, water and milk to create a complete dish.

Here is a homemade version of one of the popular flavors of Hamburger Helper.  Hopefully, you won’t be wearing one of the many “unfortunate” fashion statements from the era.  However, it might be a nice themed party idea!

Hamburger Stroganoff

2 lbs ground beef
¼ cup butter
4 oz can sliced mushrooms, drained
1 cup onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
¼ cup flour
1/3 cup chili sauce
1½ sour cream
Noodles or spaghetti

Brown ground beef in half of the butter. Add remaining butter, mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt, pepper; sauté until onions are golden and tender. Add Worcestershire sauce. Stir in flour, then chili sauce. Just before serving, blend in the sour cream. Serve hot over cooked noodles or spaghetti.
